The Monte Generoso or Calvagione ( 1701  m above sea level ) is a Swiss - Italian border mountain on the southern edge of the Alps . He belongs to the Generoso Intelvi group, which is part of the Tambogruppe .

geography

The mountain lies on the eastern bank of Lake Lugano between Lugano and Chiasso and on the western bank of Lake Como . The border between Italy and Switzerland runs over the east ridge and the north ridge. The south and west flanks belong to Switzerland, the northeast side to Italy.

The Monte Generoso is a panoramic mountain which, when the weather is clear, provides an overview of the entire Alpine arc from the Maritime Alps to Piz Bernina . Since 1890, the Ferrovia Monte Generoso (MG) rack railway has run from Capolago to just below its summit ; The operating time is in the summer months from April to October. Generoso-Vetta, the mountain station, is at 1605  m above sea level. M. directly on the border (see picture). The railway is the only “typically Swiss” rack railway south of the Alps. In 1940, for lack of money, there was a threat that rail operations would be shut down. The Migros founder Gottlieb Duttweiler campaigned vehemently for the maintenance of the cogwheel railway, whereby Migros took over the MG.

The Monte Generoso belongs geologically to the Southern Alps and has a diverse flora .

The first Hotel Monte Generoso Bellavista was opened in 1867. Pietro Nenni since 1926 and still in 1935 met Guglielmo Canevascini and Friedrich Adler on Monte Generoso

The hotel-restaurant Vetta, built in 1970, was closed in October 2010 for security reasons, as the ground had moved and cracks had appeared.

In 2017 the new restaurant Fiore di pietra (stone flower) by the Ticino architect Mario Botta was inaugurated.

Directional radio station

On the Swiss side there is a directional radio station from Swisscom ( location ). An important radio link from Ticino to the Jungfraujoch is implemented via this system . In addition, three VHF radio frequencies are internationally coordinated for this location. They were never realized and are now used from other Ticino locations.

observatory

The Osservatorio del Monte Generoso observatory at the mountain station is equipped with a 60 cm reflector telescope .
