Oceans of Slumber is an American progressive metal band from Houston , Texas that was formed in 2011.

history

The band was formed in 2011. The debut album Aetherial was published in 2013 . The band then consists of singer Ronnie Allen, drummer Dobber Beverly, bassist Keegan Kelly and guitarists Anthony Contreras and Sean Gary. The album was mixed and mastered by Russ Russell . This brought the group to the attention of Century Media , whereupon a recording deal was signed. The first EP Blue was released on this label in 2015 , on which the group covered Emperor , Pink Floyd , Candlemass and Led Zeppelin . In the same year it also went on a US tour with Evergrey and Voyager . The first album through Century Media followed in early 2016 under the name Winter . The album was recorded by producer Craig Douglas at Origin Sound, some recordings had also taken place with Mike BBQ in the Big Door Studio. The material had again been mixed and mastered by Russ Russell. The album includes a cover version of Nights in White Satin , originally from The Moody Blues .

The album The Banished Heart was released on March 2, 2018 .

style

James Christopher Monger from Allmusic heard a mixture of Progressive Rock , Death Doom , Groove Metal and Psychedelic Rock in the band . In the band's bio on oceansofslumber.com , Dobber Beverly stated that the band's influences range from country to jazz and named Stevie Ray Vaughan , King's X , Watchtower , Pantera , Absu and Imprecation as some of the influences. Prog Sothoth of progarchives.com wrote that the band plays progressive metal that is difficult to classify. In the songs you can hear influences from Faith No More , Opeth , Dream Theater and Soundgarden .

Lead singer Cammie Gilbert (2016)

In an interview with Andreas Schiffmann from Rock Hard , Dobber Beverly stated that the title Winter summarizes the themes of all the songs. In this context, the term does not stand for the season, but for a “state of mind and life principle” and for “hard times and mistakes”. With the exception of one, the lyrics were not written by the singer Gilbert, but by the other or former members. However, many of the arrangements would be Gilbert's. Beverly also said that the group knows no boundaries between southern rock , jazz, blues and “hard stuff”. Boris Kaiser Winter had reviewed an issue earlier . He called the music progressive metal. The music can be classified between Gojira , Between the Buried and Me , Twitching Tongues , Leprous and The Great Discord , but it sounds completely different because it is more melodic and soulful. The singing is " soulful- bluesy". Sometimes one can hear influences of Tori Amos in the songs . The group do occasionally blast beats use and put some " djentige subwoofer tests" one.

Sebastian Kessler from Metal Hammer noted in his review of the album that the term “Progressive Metal” is insufficient to describe it. The basic structure of the songs are "gloomy, ethereal sounds with initially only a slight metal hit, reminiscent of The Gathering ", in which the band contains atmospheric and psychedelic King Crimson influences as well as Doom Death, Jazz and Black Metal - Incorporate passages. The group commutes between Ghost Brigade and Dimmu Borgir . Song structures, rhythms and riffs are very demanding. The band also uses a piano or folk instruments in the songs .
