Odebrecht (family)

The Odebrecht were a family of lawyers, physicians and clergymen widespread in Western Pomerania since the end of the 17th century, who had an important center of life in the city of Greifswald , and later also in Wolgast , and expanded to Brazil in the second half of the 19th century to build up a large economic empire there.

The progenitor is a Paul Odebrecht, who in 1619 was the owner of a free school property in Witteborn in Mecklenburg-Strelitz . He sold the estate, then went to Greifswald via Friedland and married Elisabeth Barkholz here in 1653. With her he had two daughters and the son Andreas I.
