Oedemera is a genus of beetles fromthe sham-horned beetle family (Oedemeridae). Around 80 species are known; the genus iswidespreadfrom North Africa to Kamchatka , Japan and Taiwan . 38 species occur in Europe.
features
The beetles are 5 to 20 millimeters long, have a long and narrow body and are very hairy. The wings , which are mostly narrowing towards the rear, are colored differently, making the hind wings visible. Some species are metallic in color, others are bicoloured black and yellow, some are also black and brown. The mandibles are split at the top, the last segment of the maxillary palps is thin and elongated, the antennae are long, with the second limb being small. The prothorax is heart-shaped with distinct hollows on the sides. The anterior splints have two apical spines. In most species the hind legs of the males are very thickened. The claws of the tarsi are not toothed.
Occurrence
The animals are found throughout the Palearctic and live on the edges of forests and meadows rich in flowers .
Way of life
The adults are pronounced flower visitors and feed on pollen . The pollen grains are held in place by their hair, thereby contributing to the pollination of their host plants. The larvae feed on plant tissue.
The species of the subgenus Oncomera fly at dusk and at night and visit the blossoms of trees and shrubs such as clematis , hawthorns , linden trees and oaks . In contrast, the species of the subgenus Stenaxis and Oedemera s. st. diurnal and visit the flowers of various plant families such as sunflower , rockrose or umbelliferae .
