Oedingen is one of six local districts and at the same time one of eight districts of the association-free city of Remagen in the district of Ahrweiler in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate .

history

Was mentioned for the first time in Oedingen 853. From the Middle Ages to modern times belonged to Oedingen Reichsritterschaft Landskron . Even after the French invasion of the Rhineland in 1794 and the Peace of Campo Formio on October 17, 1797, Baron vom Stein received homage as co-owner of the Landskron estate in Oedingen in 1798 .

Due to its border location, subsequent administrative assignments always reassigned Oedingen. The French struck Oedingen of Mairie Heimersheim in the canton of Remagen in the Arrondissement de Bonn ( Rhine-Mosel Département ), under Prussia it was first assigned to the mayor's office of Gelsdorf (today: municipality of Grafschaft ) in 1815 and at the latest in 1817 to the mayor's office of Remagen .

Until the end of the 1960s, the kaolin extracted using the opencast mining method was transported by cable car from Oedingen through the forest over several kilometers to the banks of the Rhine in Oberwinter . There the kaolin was washed and transported on by train. The operation of the cable car was no longer economical with increasing motor traffic, therefore the transport by truck from Oedingen to Oberwinter was ensured in the further course.

Several dozen workers worked in the mine until well into the 1970s. With increasing automation (electrically driven stone crusher, conveyor belt, excavator), the workforce at Erbslöh was recently reduced to a few workers. The pit has also been used as a popular motocross area since the 1980s.

Attractions

The former parish church and today's cemetery chapel of St. Gertrudis is a single-nave Romanesque building whose architectural style and interior painting (frescoes) refer to the 14th century as the construction period. The main work of a renovation that took place around 1960 was the uncovering of the paintings in the choir, some of which had been painted over four times, in the mid-15th century.

Today's neo-Gothic parish church of St. Gertrudis was built in 1903-1909 according to plans by the Bonn architect J. Stumpf and consecrated on July 11, 1911 by Karl Ernst Schrod , auxiliary bishop in Trier.

The open pit called "Kaolingrube Oedingen" is located in the Wachtberg municipality and is a nature reserve designated as a biotope for the yellow-bellied toad .
