history

Manor and plane tree

A castle-like mansion is the landmark of Oelzschau. The former estate settlement with estate block corridor has 566 hectares of land and was first mentioned in 1251 with the name Vis . In 1589 it was called Olbzsch and from 1791 finally Oelzschau. In earlier years the place was initially a manor, later a chamber manor . The manor house served the noble owners of the estate as a residential building. It is designed like a castle and has been called that way over and over again. But as long as it was not inhabited by the sovereign, it was simply a mansion from which the estate was administered. Later the manor house of Oelzschau was converted into a school. The residents were parish in Staritz .

The village was incorporated into Wohlau on July 1, 1950 . Oelzschau has been part of the Northern Saxony district since 2008. Since January 1, 2013 it has been part of the town of Belgern-Schildau.

Old mansion

A manor house has been preserved from the former estate. It was built in the 16th century and acquired by the von Böhlau family in 1812. This was expropriated in 1945; thereafter the building was used as a school until 1973. Today it is privately owned.

In front of the old mansion is one of the largest plane trees in Europe - with a circumference of 9 m and about 300 years old.
