Olaf Baron von Wrangel (born July 20, 1928 in Tallinn , Estonia , † September 29, 2009 ) was a German journalist and politician ( CDU ).

Life and work

Wrangel was born the son of a landowner and lawyer. He is the grandson of General Pyotr Nikolajewitsch Wrangel (German: Peter Nikolaus von Wrangel). After attending the cathedral school in Tallinn, he moved with his family to the Reichsgau Wartheland in 1939 and attended the boarding school of the Baltic school in Miedzyzdroje . He took part in World War II as a soldier in 1944/45 and was initially used as a naval flak helper. At the end of the war he was wounded in the fighting for Berlin .

After the end of the war, Wrangel worked as a farm laborer in the Lüneburg Heath . After graduating from high school in Osterode am Harz in 1947 , he attended the Northwest German Broadcasting School (NWDR) in Hamburg and then completed an internship there. From 1949 to 1954 he studied modern history, public law and sociology at the University of Hamburg and at the same time did journalistic work for radio, newspapers and magazines. From 1954 to 1956 he was parliamentary correspondent for the NWDR in Bonn . After founding the North German Broadcasting Corporation (NDR), Wrangel became head of the NDR studio in Bonn. In this function he worked as a commentator for radio and television and also reported on international conferences. In 1961 he was appointed editor-in-chief of the NDR. In addition, from 1962 he was deputy and from 1982 to 1988 program director of radio at NDR.

Politician

Wrangel had been a member of the CDU since 1953 and was first elected to the German Bundestag in 1965. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and from 1973 to 1976 chairman of the Bundestag committee for internal German relations. From 1965 to 1969 he was deputy chairman of the CDU / CSU working group for foreign, defense and Germany policy. From October 1969 to September 1972 he acted as parliamentary manager of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group.

Wrangel represented the constituency of Stormarn - Duchy of Lauenburg in the fifth and sixth electoral terms (1965–1972) . In the eighth electoral term (1976–1980) he represented the constituency of the Duchy of Lauenburg - Stormarn-Süd . In the seventh and ninth electoral terms, he entered parliament via the Schleswig-Holstein state list . After being appointed program director for NDR radio, he resigned from the Bundestag on April 3, 1982.

From 1968 to 1970 Wrangel was also chairman of his CDU branch Aumühle .
