Ole Peter Hansen Balling
Ole Peter Hansen Balling (born April 13, 1823 in Christiania ; † May 1, 1906 there ) was a Norwegian portrait and landscape painter . As an officer, he coordinated military conflicts under the Danish and US flags.
Life
Balling, the son of the wrestler master shoemaker Johan Frederik Hansen (1780–1831) and his wife Karen Balling, apprenticed to the decorative painter and photographer Jacob Emilius Wunderlich (1809–1892) in Christiania. In 1841 he studied at the Berlin Royal Prussian Academy of the Arts . Henrich Steffens supported him there from 1843 to the beginning of 1845 . From 1846 to 1848 Balling was able to continue studying painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen . From 1848 to 1850 he went to war as a volunteer. The Danish lieutenant Balling fought against Schleswig and Holstein . He also portrayed Lieutenant Colonel Hans Helgesen (1793-1858). King Friedrich VII bought the picture.
In 1852 Balling exhibited in the Charlottenborg Art Gallery . In 1854 he worked under Thomas Couture in Paris . Balling emigrated to the United States in 1856 . From 1859 to 1861 he worked in New York as a photographer with his own studio and later worked there as a retoucher for Jeremiah Gurney (1812–1895) . During the Civil War he reported - again voluntarily - with the infantry of the northern states and - wounded in 1863 - brought it up to lieutenant colonel. From 1864 Balling portrayed army leaders and presidents; Abraham Lincoln painted watercolors and an oil painting by Ulysses S. Grant .
Returning home in 1874, Balling settled with his brother in Horten and mainly painted portraits of Norwegian naval officers in his brother's studio, but also of King Oskar II and later the composer Johan Svendsen .
Balling accompanied Ulysses S. Grant on his trip to Norway in 1878. In 1879 Balling went back to New York. From 1881 to 1890 he lived and worked in Mexico City . One of his two daughters married there. Returned home again in 1890, he became the Mexican consul in Christiania. Balling last visited New York between 1895 and 1896.

Balling married Marie Rantzau in Denmark on April 23, 1852. After his first wife Marie had died in 1853, he married the German Christine Zündorff (1831-1921) on June 27, 1857 in New York. Balling had three children - Oscar, Emma and Clara.
