Oleg Pawlowitsch Tabakow ( Russian Олег Павлович Табаков , scientific transliteration Oleg Pavlovič Tabakov ; born August 17, 1935 in Saratow , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ; † March 12, 2018 in Moscow ) was a Soviet and. Russian film and theater maker. Since 2000 he has directed the Chekhov Art Theater in Moscow.

Career

Tabakov graduated from the Moscow Theater School . Upon graduation, he became one of the founders of the Sovremennik Theater , which he directed from 1971 to 1982 before moving to the Chekhov Art Theater . From 1986 he invited many young actors to his acting studio Tabakerka (Tobacco Box), which was connected to the Chekhov Art Theater, including such later popular actors as Yevgeny Mironov , Sergei Besrukov and Vladimir Mashkov . Tabakow also worked in many other countries, where he spread the ideals of his theater.

After his debut in 1957, Tabakov's film career took place parallel to the theater. In 1961 he played in Grigori Tschuchrai's film Klarer Himmel , 1966–1967 in Sergei Bondarchuk's War and Peace , in 1969 in Alexander Mitta's lamp, my star, shines , in 1973 in the television series Seventeen Moments of Spring , in 1978 in D'Artagnan and the Three Musketeers , in 1980 in Vladimir Menshov's Oscar-winning film Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears , in 1981 and 1986 in Nikita Michalkov's films Oblomov and Black Eyes . In 1987 he played in the western parody Der Mann vom Kapuziner-Boulevard .

Tabakov gave his voice to some well-known cartoon characters, such as the cat Matroskin in The Three from Prostokwaschino by Eduard Uspenski .

In 1988 he was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR .

His son Anton Tabakow and daughter Alexandra Tabakowa are also actors. His granddaughter Polina Liefers (Lifers) (* 1988) is the daughter of the German actor Jan Josef Liefers with Alexandra Tabakowa and works at the theater in Moscow.

Political activities

In July 2012, President Vladimir Putin appointed him a member of the 25-member television council of the newly created Public Television of Russia (OTR). In October, the committee responsible in particular for program guidelines elected him as its chairman at its kick-off meeting. In March 2014, Tabakov was among the 85 first signatories of an open letter from leading figures in the Russian cultural scene in which they declared their support for Putin's policy towards Ukraine . As early as 2012, Tabakov had publicly supported Putin together with other prominent cultural workers by making themselves available as “confidants” for the presidential election campaign. In May 2014, Tabakov criticized a new law, signed by Putin, which targets the use of “filthy language” in the media and at public performances, as going too far.

According to a list published by the Russian Ministry of Culture, Tabakov earned 42.3 million rubles (approx. 940,000 euros) in Russia in 2013, behind orchestral conductors Valery Gergiev and Vladimir Spivakov, the third-highest annual income of all executives in the cultural sector.
