On St. Never 's Day (alternative title: Ein Kuckucksei am Zarenhof ; Original title: russisch После дождичка в четверг , Posle doshditschka w Tschetwerg ) is a Soviet fairy tale film by Mikhail Jusowski from 1986 based on a manuscript by Alexander Ostrowski .
action
A fortune teller prophesies an heir to the throne of Tsar Awdei. To make sure that nothing goes wrong, he has three cradles built just in case there are triplets. He gets his Tsarevich , whom he calls Ivan. Immediately afterwards a second wet nurse comes into the throne room and presents the tsar with the newborn son of the chambermaid Varwara, who is also to be called Ivan. Finally, a third Ivan, a foundling, follows, who is placed in one of the three cradles with the other two. The two Ivans are to become the tsar's son's most loyal friends. Varvara then senses her great luck. She assigns a band of robbers led by Yegori to steal the tsarevich and the foundling, who are supposed to grow up under forced labor, and places her own child in the tsar's cradle.
The years fly by, Varvara has gained unimagined power and pampered her son, who has become a vain kid. The actual son of the tsar is meanwhile toiling with the boulder in a heavily guarded quarry. One day Varvara appears there on a magic carpet and talks to the superintendent Jegori. The two Iwans can overhear them talking about their evil plan and how it is decided to kill them. They then get hold of the magic carpet and flee from misery. Back in the palace, the chambermaid forces the tsar to cede his throne to her Ivan, but he attaches a condition to it. First he should marry the Tsarevna Milolika, who is held captive by the immortal Kashchei . Whoever freed the Tsar's daughter would get half the Tsar's empire.
So Varwara's son Ivan and Jegori set off. In their luggage they have a sack of gold with which they are supposed to buy the immortal, as well as a magic game whose owner can never lose if the first plan fails. In the forest they come across the guardian of the moor, who demands a tribute of twenty talers. They pretend not to have any gold, only to have coal, and let the old woman give you a few gold pieces. This shows them the way, but turns the sack of gold into coal, which they burn. Arrived at the palace of the immortal Tsar Kashchei, Ivan offers a game about the Tsar's daughter. After Kashchei has lost several times, he increases the stake by a crystal egg, which contains his doom. He loses again and Ivan wants to break the egg, but it turns out to be a fake and the tsar turns him and Jegori to stone.
The true son of the tsar and his companion Ivan are meanwhile flying through the forest. They too want to free Milolika. They reach the moor, over which they fall, but can escape to the bank, where they meet the magical old woman. Again this demands a tribute, but instead the two warriors prepare a hearty meal for her and they also refuse to pay. Then she points out to the guard Kashchei's only weakness - he likes fairy tales. When they arrive at the palace, the two ivans play a puppet theater for the ruler. During the performance, the tsarevich sneaks away and finds the tsarevna walking in a stone forest of transformed people. However, the immortal sees through the ruse and orders the arrest. He gives the boulder the choice. Either he goes to Shah Babadur to get the miracle bird or his friend would be charmed.
So the boulder rushes to the old woman, gets the washed magic carpet and flies to the Orient . There he meets the Sharen, who is annoyed that his miracle bird, who recognizes lies and cannot stand rudeness, does not want to sing. Ivan frees the bird woman from her cage, and a song can be heard. In the meantime, the tsar's son managed to escape from his cell in the palace. He finds the real egg with the spoilage of Kashchei and exchanges it for the fake. Thereupon he goes to the old woman, from whom he asks for the carpet, but it is known that he is no longer there. The next morning they see the boulder flying on the carpet towards the immortal. The Tsarevich hurries after his companion with an unbreakable sword received from the old guard. Once there, the guards fight, and they eventually encounter Kashchei. The truth-knowing wonder bird also arrives. Again the tsar offers the supposed forgery of the crystal egg for sale, on the assumption that one would maliciously try to destroy it. He wants to prove to Milolika, whom he desires himself, that there are no good people, so that she finally agrees to take him as a husband. But the tsar's son does not destroy the egg, but still thinks it is the real thing. Laughing, the immortal throws it on the ground and disappears, realizing his mistake too late, there. The petrified are redeemed and the miracle bird confirms the true son of the tsar, who chooses Milolika as tsarina. The boulder leaves the court of the tsars and travels the world singing with his feathered loved one.
