Oleksandr Viktorovich Yanukovych ( Ukrainian Олександр Вікторович Янукович ; born July 1, 1973 in Jenakieve in Donetsk Oblast ) is a Ukrainian entrepreneur . He is the eldest son of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych .

Life

Oleksandr Yanukovych studied dentistry at the Donetsk National University . Since 2006 he has owned the Management Assets Company (MAKO) , which constructed office buildings and hotels in eastern Ukraine. He also acquired the majority of the assets of the All-Ukrainian Development Bank . The company MAKO Trading AG, which he also owns, had been registered in Geneva since 2011 and specialized in the sale of anthracite coal from Ukraine. The Swiss journalist Martine Brocard pointed out in an article in the Sunday newspaper in January 2013 that the president's son had privileged access to coal mining in Ukraine, as numerous mines there belong to the state.

In 2012, Oleksandr Yanukovych's net worth was estimated at $ 99 million . He ranks 98th on the list of the richest people in Ukraine compiled by Forbes magazine , repeatedly declaring that the commercial success of his companies was not due to his father's office. In this context, media reports since 2012 have repeatedly spoken of the growing influence of Oleksandr Yanukovych and his circle of friends on Ukrainian politics.

After Viktor Yanukovych was ousted by the Ukrainian parliament on February 22, 2014, the Swiss Federal Council blocked a number of accounts of his followers on February 28, 2014, including that of Oleksandr. At the same time, the Geneva public prosecutor opened criminal proceedings against him on suspicion of money laundering . In the course of the investigation, the premises of MAKO Trading in Geneva were also searched. According to media reports, Oleksandr Yanukovych's fortune was estimated at half a billion dollars at the time.

On March 6, 2014, the Council of the European Union in Brussels imposed restrictive measures against Oleksandr Yanukovych with Regulation 208/2014. This is justified by the criminal prosecution of Yanukovych to investigate crimes related to the embezzlement of Ukrainian public funds and the illegal transfer of these funds abroad.
