Course of the competition

Unidentified shot putter at the 1896 Olympic Games
Olympic champion Robert Garrett, who also competed successfully in other disciplines: Discus throw - first / high and long jump - each second

April 7, 1896, 3:40 p.m.

The throws were made from a square area with a side length of 2.13 m. The participants were initially given three attempts, the best four athletes then three more throws.

Garrett achieved his winning distance on the first try. Gouskos came very close to him in the last round, so that the Greek spectators initially even celebrated him as the winner.

The world's best shot putter of 1896, however, was missing from this competition. The Irish Dennis Horgan won all championships possible for him. His longest shot of this year was 14.15 m, his weakest at 13.24 m.

Similar to some other disciplines, the results of the shot put can only be reconstructed imprecisely. Depending on the source, there are different information from place four.
