Document server

A document server (also publication server or repository / repository ) is a digital library for the publication and archiving of electronic publications in a repository . In contrast to a simple publication on a homepage , the operator of the publication server also takes care of long-term archiving and indexing of the published documents with the help of bibliographic metadata . Document servers are often used for preprints .

In Germany, document servers can be certified by the German Initiative for Network Information (DINI). The Open Archives Initiative promotes the networking of document servers by establishing technical standards. With the "Protocol for Metadata Harvesting" (OAI-PMH) developed by it, information about the stocks of document servers - so-called metadata - can be collected. The data is then aggregated and indexed. In this way, the holdings of several document servers can be searched across the board. This is possible, for example, with the vertical search engines BASE and OAIster .

Most of the German document servers are university publication servers that mainly receive electronic dissertations .

Institutional document servers

Institutional document servers contain publications from an institution such as a university or other research facility. They offer authors increased visibility and findability of their publications (e.g. via search engines) as well as fast and free access ( open access ). In addition, institutional document servers guarantee the long-term availability of the publications, which is not guaranteed with other forms of electronic publication, such as uploading to social media .

• Online publications of the German National Library : The DNB collects e-books, e-journals, e-papers, university publications , sheet music, audio books, digital copies and selected websites as part of its statutory collection mandate .
• OpenAIRE : network of repositories that aggregates publications that are particularly EU-funded.
