Location and economy

The (former) municipality on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee was the southernmost municipality in the province of Zuid-Holland. Their soils consist of fertile clay .

Overflakkee is crossed by the N59 , which connects the area at the Hellegatsplein junction over the Haringvliet bridge on the A29 motorway to the south with Dinteloord ( Steenbergen municipality ) and to the north with Rotterdam .

To the north of Oude Tonge, on the N59, is the 60 hectare industrial park (Bedrijvenpark Oostflakkee) .

Most of the residents are still living from (declining) agriculture or are commuters who work in Rotterdam and the surrounding area.

history

In 1284 Albrecht van Voorne bought the "glory" Grijsoord from Floris V , Count of Holland . The area was then a used only by shepherds and fishermen mudflats . After the purchase, people settled there who dealt with the so-called therein (c) kdelven ; this term describes the extraction of sea salt from the salty peat layer lying under the clay and silt by burning it. The ashes are boiled, after which the salt can simply be collected after cooling.

The wadden area was diked in the 15th century and converted into polders (Oude Tonge; 1438, Den Bommel and Ooltgensplaat: 1481–1526). The fertile soil turned out to be very productive. The village of Achthuizen was later built at the intersection of several dikes (a house with eight apartments is said to have stood there).

When the Eighty Years War broke out in 1568, a fort was built near Ooltgensplaat , which remained in use until around 1811. The village of Oude Tonge was almost completely destroyed in a fire in 1647. In the same year the new church building of the Reformed Church in the village of Den Bommel, whose inhabitants had previously visited the church in Ooltgensplaat, was built.

Achthuizen was settled by seasonal workers from Noord-Brabant , which explains that this village is the only one in the community that is predominantly Catholic. From 1865 to 1944 there was also a monastery here. In the 18th century there was temporarily a flourishing fishery for sturgeon and salmon . On February 1, 1953, the area was badly hit by the storm surge disaster. The construction of the Delta Works then freed Oostflakkee from seclusion; later some water sports tourism arose on the coasts.
