OpenMediaVault ( OMV ) is a free operating system for network storage (NAS) developed since 2009 . It is based on the Linux distribution Debian .

history

The developer Volker Theile had previously worked on the FreeBSD -based FreeNAS project. Because of the better software and hardware support of Linux compared to FreeBSD, a new implementation of FreeNAS with Debian as the basis by Volker Theile was announced. Shortly afterwards, Olivier Cochard-Labbé, the original developer of FreeNAS, came back and announced that he would remain with FreeBSD as the basis for FreeNAS. The two developers finally agreed on coreNAS as the new name for the Debian-based version, which in turn was changed to the current name OpenMediaVault a short time later . Since then, both projects have been further developed in parallel.

technology

OpenMediaVault works largely without adapting the program packages provided by Debian . Settings can be adjusted and the system managed via a web interface . File-based services such as CIFS ( Samba ) and NFS represent the core function. With a plug-in , OpenMediaVault can also handle block-based data access as is common with SAN and offers an iSCSI implementation for this . A complete list of the supported services and protocols can be found in the function overview .

Using a programming interface (API), it is possible to integrate additional functions as plug-ins in the web interface. The developer provides several plug-ins that can be installed directly via the web interface. Additional plug-ins are provided by independent developers.

Functions

Plug-ins

Other plug-ins are provided and maintained by external developers. The majority of plug-ins are developed by a group called OpenMediaVault Plugin Developers . The status of all plug-ins can be viewed online. Around 30 plug-ins were available in October 2014. In June 2015 there are already over 70 stable plug-ins available. Here is an excerpt from the plug-ins of the external developers:

System requirements

The automatic operating system installation takes up the entire disk on which the installation takes place. Users cannot save their own data on this. Therefore, at least two data carriers are required for productive use of OpenMediaVault. Installation on a USB stick is possible, but not recommended. But you can first install a Debian on a partition and then install the OpenMediaVault packages. You can then use the other partitions for your own data.
