OpenMediaVault ( OMV ) is a free operating system for network storage (NAS) developed since 2009 . It is based on the Linux distribution Debian .
history
The developer Volker Theile had previously worked on the FreeBSD -based FreeNAS project. Because of the better software and hardware support of Linux compared to FreeBSD, a new implementation of FreeNAS with Debian as the basis by Volker Theile was announced. Shortly afterwards, Olivier Cochard-Labbé, the original developer of FreeNAS, came back and announced that he would remain with FreeBSD as the basis for FreeNAS. The two developers finally agreed on coreNAS as the new name for the Debian-based version, which in turn was changed to the current name OpenMediaVault a short time later . Since then, both projects have been further developed in parallel.
technology
OpenMediaVault works largely without adapting the program packages provided by Debian . Settings can be adjusted and the system managed via a web interface . File-based services such as CIFS ( Samba ) and NFS represent the core function. With a plug-in , OpenMediaVault can also handle block-based data access as is common with SAN and offers an iSCSI implementation for this . A complete list of the supported services and protocols can be found in the function overview .
Using a programming interface (API), it is possible to integrate additional functions as plug-ins in the web interface. The developer provides several plug-ins that can be installed directly via the web interface. Additional plug-ins are provided by independent developers.
Functions
- Protocols: CIFS ( Samba ), FTP , NFS (version 3 and 4) , SSH , rsync , iSCSI , AFP and TFTP
- Software RAID with RAID levels 0, 1, 4, 5, 6 and 10 as well as JBOD
- Monitoring: Syslog , Watchdog , SMART , SNMP (v1 / 2c / 3) (read only)
- Status reports by email
- Status graphs for CPU usage, LAN transfer rates, hard disk usage and memory usage
- GPT / EFI partitioning> 2 TByte possible
- File systems : ext2 , ext3 , ext4 , XFS , JFS , NTFS , FAT32
- Quota
- User and group management
- Access controls via ACL
- Link aggregation , Wake On LAN
- Plug-in system
Plug-ins
- ClamAV - virus protection program
- Digital Audio Access Protocol - makes audio files available in a local network (also for iTunes )
- SAN and iSCSI - block-based access to data storage over the network
- Lightweight Directory Access Protocol - information retrieval and modification of a directory service
- Logical Volume Manager - enables the creation and management of dynamically changeable partitions
- Netatalk - file, time and print server for Apple Macintosh
- Plug-in to support an uninterruptible power supply
- easy modification of the routing tables
- Plug-in, the (automatic) backups to external USB - hard drives allows
- OwnCloud - Enables file hosting to be run on your own server
Other plug-ins are provided and maintained by external developers. The majority of plug-ins are developed by a group called OpenMediaVault Plugin Developers . The status of all plug-ins can be viewed online. Around 30 plug-ins were available in October 2014. In June 2015 there are already over 70 stable plug-ins available. Here is an excerpt from the plug-ins of the external developers:
- Anacron - Extension of the cron service with some functions
- again , mhdfs , gray hole and snapraid - Make different methods of pooling disks ready
- Autoshutdown - Provides several ways to automatically shut down the NAS when it is not in use
- backup , rsnapshot - the former provides Clonezilla and SystemRescueCd , among others , enables backup of the operating system installation. The latter enables incremental backups of the user data
- Bit torrent client ( transmission )
- Bit torrent sync
- Caliber - e-book database management
- Print server ( CUPS )
- extplorer - web -based file manager
- Generic download manager , pyLoad and JDownloader v2
- MySQL - database server
- Web server ( nginx )
- OpenVPN and OpenVPN-AS
- Plex Media Server
- PXE
- Roundcube
- Sickbeard , SABnzbd , Headphones and CouchPotato - various plug-ins for access to the Usenet
- Subsonic
- Video Disk Recorder (VDR)
- VirtualBox
- WordPress
- ZFS
System requirements
The automatic operating system installation takes up the entire disk on which the installation takes place. Users cannot save their own data on this. Therefore, at least two data carriers are required for productive use of OpenMediaVault. Installation on a USB stick is possible, but not recommended. But you can first install a Debian on a partition and then install the OpenMediaVault packages. You can then use the other partitions for your own data.
Hardware support
- Hardware RAID - Controller : support all of Debian
- Hard disk interfaces: PATA (IDE) / SATA , SCSI , USB
- Network cards: all WLAN and Ethernet network cards supported by Debian
- CPU architectures: IA-32 (32-bit), AMD64 (64-bit), ARM architecture
