Opera Academy Bad Orb

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Opernakademie Bad Orb is an institution under private law for the promotion of talented singers for the opera stage and the annual staging of an opera in the concert hall of Bad Orb .

Mission and constitution of the academy

The Bad Orb Opera Academy, founded in 1987, is a non-profit organization with the aim of promoting young singers for the opera stage. It offers young opera singers the opportunity, under professional guidance and under real conditions, to rehearse a full opera role up to the stage of performance. The five-week preparation time and the performance are intended to give the young musicians practical experience for the stage profession.

history

In 1986 two singing students from the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf, Zelma Kelly and Elke Hermanns, arranged a meeting between Else Mayer-Lismann and the Bad Orber music director Horst Welter. Mayer-Lismann, who grew up in Frankfurt am Main , emigrated to England as a Jew in 1938. In 1963 she founded “The Mayer-Lismann Opera Workshop”, a training facility for young opera singers. In 1984 she was honored by Queen Elizabeth II for her services with the "Member of British Empire" .

Mayer-Lismann as director and Welter as conductor agreed in February 1987 their opera The Marriage of Figaro to stage perform and in the concert hall Bad Orb. Mayer-Lismann provided the costumes, as well as some singers, and Michael Millard was the musical assistant. The premiere took place after five weeks of rehearsal time. The two initiators were also involved: Zelma Kelly as Marzelline and Elke Hermanns as Countess , the Frankfurt Opera Orchestra played.

In the following year, 1988, Mayer-Lismann and Welter directed Così fan tutte . It was their last performance together. Mayer-Lismann died in London at the beginning of 1990, Welter gave up the musical direction in 1990 due to reasons of age. After a short interlude with the Kammersänger Heinz Hagenau , Kammersänger Carlos Krause , a long-time ensemble member of the Frankfurt Opera , took over the management until 2013. The Bad Orb Opera Academy owes its current reputation in promoting young talent in Germany to him.

The long-time musical director Michael Millard took over the overall direction in 2013, and Erik Biegel, singer at the Wiesbaden Opera , joined as director in 2014 . Millard and Biegel have been running the Opera Academy together since 2017.

Holder of the Opera Academy

From 1987 to 2001 Bad Orb Kur GmbH was the organizer and sponsor of the Opera Academy. On December 12, 2001, the "Association of Friends of the Bad Orb Opera Academy" took over the sponsorship. This association, founded on the initiative of Karin Metzler-Müller , has been planning, realizing and financing the annual events since then. The members of the association are all volunteers without compensation.

The task of the association is to promote cultural purposes such as the implementation of the annual opera academy and, within this framework, the organization of concerts, lectures and discussions with artists.

Club members were and are, among others, Hilmar Hoffmann , Christine von Isenburg, Jürgen Heraeus , Bernd Loebe , Lutz Raettig, INK, Ingrid Sonntag-Ramirez Ponce , Sarah von Isenburg and Asfa-Wossen Asserate .

Reception, awards

In 2019, the Friends of the Bad Orb Opera Academy received for its project work, through which “young talent is promoted and ... an opera is staged every year”, the “since 1977 annually for outstanding achievements in the field of visual arts, music. .. “, awarded the culture prize of the Main-Kinzig-Kreis.
