Austrocylindropuntia lagopus is a species of plant in the genus Austrocylindropuntia from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet lagopus means 'hare's foot' and refers to the densely hairy shoot sections of the species.

description

Austrocylindropuntia lagopus grows in very dense, large cushions with a diameter of up to 1 meter and a height of 60 centimeters. The humped and densely hairy shoot sections are short, cylindrical and up to 25 centimeters and more long. Occasionally they are shorter and more spherical. Very fine hairs up to 2 centimeters long arise from the areoles on them and are arranged in only one row. The white, slightly sloping glochids are only sparsely available and 1 to 1.5 centimeters in length. The up to 7 millimeters long leaf rudiments are hidden between the hair. The single yellow thorn is 2 to 2.5 inches long.

The golden yellow flowers are 2 to 3 inches long. The pericarpel is hairy towards the tip. The egg-shaped, thin-walled fruits are light yellow-green before ripening and then turn light pink.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Austrocylindropuntia lagopus is widespread in the highlands of the Peruvian region of Puno and Bolivia in the La Paz department at altitudes of about 4100 to 4700 meters.

The first description as Opuntia lagopus by Karl Moritz Schumann was published in 1903. Friedrich Ritter placed the species in the genus Austrocylindropuntia in 1981 , but did not give a direct page number on the description of the basionyma . In 2003 Ivor Crook , John Arnold and Martin Lowry validated Ritter's species names. Further nomenclature synonyms are Tephrocactus lagopus (K.Schum.) Backeb. (1936), Tephrocactus floccosus var. Lagopus (K.Schum.) F.Ritter (1958, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3), Andinopuntia lagopus (K.Schum.) Guiggi (2011) and Punotia lagopus (K.Schum .) DRHunt (2011).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. listed as endangered.
