Opuntia stenopetala is a species of plant in the genus Opuntia ( Opuntia ) from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet stenopetala means 'with narrow petals'. A special feature of Opuntia species is their dioecious . Spanish common names are "Arrastradillo" and "Nopal Serrano".

Opuntia stenopetala grows shrubby with low shoots that often form mats. The inverted egg-shaped to round, 10 to 20 centimeters long shoot sections are gray-green and sometimes have a purple hue. The leaves are up to 2 millimeters long and are dark red. The young areoles , 1 to 3 centimeters apart , have plenty of brown glochids . The two to four dark red to black thorns are up to 5 centimeters long.
The unisexual, reddish to orange flowers are up to 5 centimeters long. The spherical fruits are up to 3 centimeters long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Opuntia stenopetala is widespread in the Mexican states of Coahuila , Nuevo León , San Luis Potosí , Tamaulipas , Zacatecas , Querétaro , Hidalgo, and Guanajuato .
The first description was published in 1857 by George Engelmann .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
