Oreomunnea pterocarpa is a Central American tree species from the walnut family(Juglandaceae).

features

The trees reach heights of up to 46 m and diameters of up to 80 cm at chest height . They form clear buttress roots. The bark is gray to reddish brown on the surface and yellow-orange on the inside. The buds are covered with buttery yellow, shield-shaped scales and are not hairy.

The leaves are opposite and are usually bare. In young plants and in root shoots, the leaf stem bases and nodal areas are hairy. The petiole is 3.5 to 6 cm long, the rachis 7 to 10 cm. The 6 to 8, rarely only 4 leaflets are stalked 5 to 15 mm long, are opposite to almost so. They are always with entire margins, their base is symmetrical to asymmetrical, rolled back on one or both sides, auricles are missing.

The inflorescences are on the side of last year's shoots or on the border between last year's and current shoots. The inflorescences are mixed (androgynous) panicles: the central catkin is female with 15 to 20 flowers, upright to flowering, later drooping. It is surrounded by 2 to 3 pairs of opposing male kittens.

The male flowers sit in a three-lobed, long, narrow and flat bract . They have 5 to 6 flower segments (sepals and / or bracts ), which are flat and unevenly arranged. The 16 to 19 stamens are in two indistinct rows. The pollen grains are approximately triangular in polar view and have a diameter of 22 micrometers. The female flowers are sessile or almost sessile and are at an angle of 45 ° to the kitten axis. The flower tube is elongated. The calyx lobes and stigma stand out clearly beyond the flower cup when the flower blooms. The four calyx lobes are narrow and reach the level of the scar. The stigma is visible when it blooms. The stylus is elongated and split into two long stylus branches.

The fruit is large and three-winged. The side wings are up to 13 cm long, the middle up to 11 cm. The spherical nut is up to 15 mm in size and surrounded by a paper cover. The nutshell is gristly.

The first two leaves of the seedling that appear outdoors are opposite, simple and with entire margins. The next following leaves are alternate, simple and with entire margins, followed by a transition to pinnate leaves and later a sudden transition to opposite leaf position and entire leaflets.

distribution

The species has long been considered endemic to Costa Rica . Most of the finds come from the province of Cartago , where the trees grow in the rainforest along the tributaries of the Río Reventazón . Here the species is referred to as Gavilan blanco . The altitude distribution is given as 200 to 1500 m.

There are now finds of the species from Chiapas in Mexico and the Coclé province in Panama. The species is listed as Endangered by the IUCN .
