The orpheus chor münchen e. V. is a Munich concert choir . It has around 65 singers. Gerd Guglhör has been the artistic director since it was founded in 1982 .

history

The choir was founded in 1982 as a chamber choir of the Academic Choral Society (AGV) . In 1996 the orpheus chor münchen was founded as a registered association. Since Gerd Guglhör was appointed professor for ensemble conducting and choral vocal training, the choir has usually rehearsed at the Munich Music Academy .

In 1994 the orpheus chor received the golden diploma at the international choir competition in Riva. In 2000 the work of the orpheus choir was honored with the Orlando-di-Lasso-Medal of the Bavarian Singers Association. In 2010 the orpheus chor organized the anniversary concert for the 150th anniversary of the Bavarian Singers' Association.

repertoire

One focus of the choir's work is the development of rarely performed works from different epochs and styles up to world premieres and first-time re-performances of rediscovered works. The premieres include works by composers living in Munich (including Enjott Schneider , Kai Westermann , Heinz Benker , Laurence Traiger ), Cornelius Hirsch, Harald Feller; among the rediscoveries the entire a cappella work by Heinrich Kaminski , the Requiem for Joseph Haydn by Georg Joseph Vogler , the Missa Nigra and Missa Superba by Johann Kaspar Kerll and the Mass in F and Stabat Mater by Franz Lachner .

Working method

The choir rehearses once a week. There are two rehearsal weekends each year. Concerts and recordings typically take up at least two additional weekends per year. At its core, the orpheus chor is an amateur choir. However, many members are committed to training their voices well beyond their rehearsals. A number of music teachers and music students also take part.

Appearances

The Orpheus Choir has performed regularly in St. Mark's Church for many years . Other concert venues include a. the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche , the Himmelfahrtskirche (Munich-Sendling) , St. Ursula in Schwabing , as well as the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Munich-Neuhausen as well as the Herkulessaal and the Prinzregententheater .

Outside of Munich, the choir can be heard regularly in the Pollinger library , at the European Weeks in Passau and at the Music Summer Festival between Inn and Salzach .

At the Diabelli Contest 2016, the choir premiered the winning piece by Darren Schmidt (USA) in the Allerheiligenhofkirche in Munich.

Radio and CD productions

The orpheus chor has an intensive cooperation with Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR). Many programs are recorded by the BR and broadcast regularly. In addition to new choral music by Francis Poulenc , Aaron Copland , Benjamin Britten , György Ligeti , Jean Françaix , Paul Hindemith , Claude Debussy a . a. a series on polyphony with works by Josquin Desprez , Orlando di Lasso and Johann Sebastian Bach was produced. A work analysis of the St. John Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach was published in 1994 as a six-part series and in 2000 as a CD by Koch Classics (meanwhile out of print).

Up to 2012, 15 CDs were produced in cooperation with the Bavarian Radio at Calig , Schott Wergo, Arte Nova and OehmsClassics . One focus is on new discoveries by Munich (court) composers, including the Missa Superba and the Missa Nigra by Johann Kaspar Kerll, the complete recording of the sacred a-cappella work by Heinrich Kaminski and the sacred choral works by Franz Lachner . A CD with Abbé Vogler's Requiem was released in 2009 by OehmsClassics, and in 2012 the CD "Jubilate Deo" with works by Johann Stadlmayr and Giovanni Gabrieli (also OehmsClassics) was released.
