Au is a village and part of the political municipality of Wädenswil in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland .

geography

The Au is located in the northwest of Wädenswil on Lake Zurich and has a train station on the Zurich - Chur railway line . Until 1925 it was an independent school community .

The Au consists of the parts Oberort, Mittelort and Unterort as well as the peninsula of the same name , to which the place name goes back. It was first mentioned in 1316 as "Owe". The name Naglikon , which has been handed down since 1130, is older and is only used as a field name today.

History and culture

The remains of a prehistoric pile dwellings in Lake Zurich near the Vorderen Au are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps .

Until the 20th century, the Au was dominated by agriculture. It was only after the Second World War that strong growth set in, so that industrial zones and large residential areas emerged. The so-called model settlement Gwad , built in 1943 by Hans Fischli and Oskar Stock , comprises 48 residential buildings. It is one of the earliest and most important evidence of publicly funded building in the Canton of Zurich. The Catholic and Reformed parishes of Wädenswil both have a church building in the Au district.

population

The Au has its own neighborhood association, which cares for the interests of the Au population. Regular meetings with the city government of Wädenswil ensure that these interests are asserted. Paul Meier, President of the Au neighborhood association, is referred to with a smile by his relatives as well as by many of the Au residents' "secret mayor of the Au".

traffic

The district of Au is located on the Zurich - Chur railway line and is directly connected to the S 8 Winterthur - Wallisellen - Zurich HB - Thalwil - Pfäffikon SZ S-Bahn lines of the Zurich Transport Association . Many residents of the district also use the good bus connections to Wädenswil with its wide range of transport options (see here) . The Au is connected with the bus routes 121 and 122 with Wädenswil, with the bus route 121 also with Horgen. Lake Zurich run by the Au peninsula from passenger boat connections .

The A3 motorway from Zurich to Chur , the Seestrasse and the Hirzelpassstrasse in the direction of Sihlbrugg open up the Au for individual traffic .
