The town of Ost is the smallest of the seven towns in the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony .

The town east borders in the north on the town northeast , in the east on the district Wolfenbüttel with the city Wolfenbüttel and the municipality Oderwald , in the south on the town southeast , in the southwest on the town west and in the west on the town north .

The locality east was created together with the other six localities on January 1, 1972 to reduce the number of local councils to seven. Before that, all 29 districts that were part of Salzgitter at the time had their own local council. The first local election took place that same year.

The local council consists of 15 councilors. According to the main statutes of the city of Salzgitter, this is the number specified for a town with less than 10,000 inhabitants. The current legislative period began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021. The local elections on September 11, 2016 resulted in the following distribution of seats (change from 2011):
