The village south is the second largest of the seven localities in the independent city of Salzgitter in Lower Saxony .
geography
The village south borders in the north on the village west , in the northeast on the village southeast , in the southeast, south and southwest on the district of Goslar with the municipalities of Liebenburg and Wallmoden and in the west on the district of Wolfenbüttel with the joint municipality of Baddeckestedt .

history
The locality south was created together with the other six localities on January 1, 1972 in order to reduce the number of local councils to seven. Before that, all 29 districts that were part of Salzgitter at the time had their own local council. The first local election took place that same year.

Like all localities, the locality south has a local council, from whose ranks a local mayor is elected.
Local council
The local council consists of 19 councilors. According to the main statute of the city of Salzgitter, this is the number stipulated for a town with 20,001 to 30,000 inhabitants. The current legislative period began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021. The local elections on September 11, 2016 resulted in the following distribution of seats (change from 2011):
- SPD : 7 seats (−1)
- CDU : 7 seats (+1)
- MBS : 2 seats (± 0)
- Left : 1 seat (± 0)
- Green : 1 seat (± 0)
- FDP : 1 seat (± 0)
A local council member of MBS has since left the electoral group and is now a non-party member of the local council.
Local mayor
The local mayor is Michael Hoffmann (CDU). His deputies are Rainer Nordshaus (SPD) and Renate Conze (FDP).
