Ortwin Hennig , NDC (born March 23, 1950 in Bielefeld ) is a former German diplomat . He was last German ambassador to Georgia from 2010 to 2015 .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1968, he began studying political science , history and law . After a temporary career as a soldier from 1969 to 1971, he resumed his studies and finished it in 1976 with a diploma in political science.

In 1976 he entered the diplomatic service and, after completing his attaché training in 1978, was initially employed at the headquarters of the Foreign Office in Bonn . He then worked at the embassy in Afghanistan between 1981 and 1982 and then in the Soviet Union . After working at the Permanent Mission to the European Union from 1985 to 1988, he took part in a course at the NATO Defense College in Rome .

From 1989 to 1991 he was Deputy Head of Department in the Foreign Office and then Deputy Head of the German Delegation in the negotiations on conventional armed forces in Europe (VSKE) in Vienna . After working as Deputy Head of the German Delegation at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna from 1992 to 1997, he was Head of Division in the Office of the Federal President . In 2000 he was appointed envoy and head of the economic department at the embassy in Russia .

After returning to Germany, from 2004 to 2006 he was Commissioner for Civilian Crisis Prevention, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding (GF-K) in the Department for Global Issues, United Nations , Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office. He then became Vice President of the East West Institute and Director of the Conflict Prevention Program in Brussels .

Ortwin Hennig was the successor of Patricia Flor as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Georgia from 2010 to 2015 . He then retired.
