Orjachowo [ oˈrjaxovo ] ( Bulgarian . Оряхово ) is a city in northwestern Bulgaria , in the Oblast of Vraza , on the right bank of the Danube - in the western Danube plain.

Orjachowo is one of the smaller cities in the country, but is a border inspection point for Danube shipping.

The city is on the Danube Cycle Path , an international long-distance cycle route .

local community

Orjachowo is the administrative center of the municipality of the same name Orjachowo. The municipality consists of seven settlements: Orjachowo, Selanowizi, Ostrow, Leskowez, Gorni Wadin, Galowo and Dolni Wadin and extends over an area of 329 km².

It is located in the northeastern part of Wraza Oblast and borders in the south on the municipalities Bjala and Knescha, in the east on the municipality Dolna Mitropolja, in the west and southwest on the municipality Misija and in the north on the Danube.

history

In the course of time the city had different names: Warchow (Bulgarian Върхов), Oresow (Орезов), Oreow (Ореов), Rachowo (Рахово) and from 1886 Orjachowo .

Archaeological digs have unearthed settlements from all historical periods - from the early Neolithic to the late Middle Ages. Late Mycenaean bronze swords and horse armor were found from the Thracian period.

The heyday during the rule of the Roman Empire over this region is evidenced by the remains of the ancient fortress Wariana (Variana ??) near the village of Leskovets and the fortress Valeriana ( Valeriana  ??) near the village of Dolni Wadin, on the banks of the Danube below Ostrow. The important Roman road from Belgrade to Constantinople , the "Via Singiduno usque ad Constantinopolim per ripam Danubii", ran here. One kilometer east of the city is the medieval fortress Kamaka (Bulgarian Камъка; German: the stone), which was built in the 9th century AD. The armies of two crusades passed here, led by the Hungarian kings Sigismund (1396) and Wladislaw Jagelo (1444). Today all that remains of the fortress is a rectangular two-story tower from the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire . From here you have a wide panoramic view over the Danube.

The city has an archaeological and an ethnographic museum.
