Oscar Alem

Oscar Alem (born November 23, 1941 in Olavarría ; † November 26, 2017 ) was an Argentine pianist , double bass player and composer .

Alem was double bass player in Enrique "Mono" Villegas' trio in the 1960s and also played in the orchestras of Lalo Schifrin , Horacio Salgán , Marito Cosentino and Astor Piazzolla . After a career as a jazz and tango bassist, he switched to the piano and Argentinian folklore . He composed cuecas , tonadas, milongas , triunfos, zambas , chacareras and tangos and set numerous poems by Hamlet Lima Quintana , María E. Walsh , Suma Paz and Homero Manzi to music . For the Zamba Antigua muchacha based on a poem by Lima Quintana, he received first prize at the Festival Cosquín de la Canción in 1976.

His compositions have been written by Mercedes Sosa , María Elena Walsh , Susanna Moncayo , Julia Elena Dávalos , Silvia Iriondo , Domingo Cura , Hugo Díaz , Kelo Palacios , Jairo , José Luis Merlín and Etienne Plasman and the groups Los Huanca Hua , Los Fronterizos , Movimiento , Araucaria and Nohemí added. He has performed at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Carnegie Hall and Town Hall in New York, Olympia in Paris, Concertgeboue in Amsterdam and the Royal Albert Hall in London and has worked with numerous musicians such as Maysa Matarazzo and Chabuca Granda , Nati Mistral , Joan Baez , Gal Costa , Beth Carbalho , Julia Zenko , Susana Rinaldi , Jorge Calandrelli , Enrique Villegas , the piano duo Horacio Salgán - Dante Amicarelli , Carlos García , Ariel Ramírez , Domingo Cura, Dino Saluzzi , Kelo Palacios, Marián and Chango Farías Gómez , Raúl Barbosa , Miguel Simón , Ramona Galarza , Teresa Parodi , Alfredo Zitarrosa , Daniel Riolobos , Roberto Yanés , Luis Ordoñez , Jean-Pierre Rampal , Clare Fischer , Milton Nascimento and Chico Buarque together.

Oscar Alem died of leukemia a few days after his 76th birthday.
