Osmar East race after an apprenticeship as a landscape gardener to study painting and graphics at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts . Since 1985 he has been working as a freelance artist, among other things in the fields of painting, graphics and sculpture . Osten uses a variety of materials, including paper, canvas, wood, glass, bronze, aluminum, ceramics and porcelain.

In addition to solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Germany and abroad, he has lectured at the Schneeberg School of Applied Arts (1991–1995) and at the Bilbao Arte Center (2010).

In 1998, Osten was discovered among the artists of the Dix Prize and other artists in the Gera art collection by his later friend Johannes Gachnang and recommended to Milan , where he was represented by a gallery in Milan. Osmar Osten was nicknamed "Mr. Snowman" in Milan because of his long-standing subject of the "Snowman".

Osten has been a full member of the Saxon Academy of the Arts since 2002 and was secretary of the "Fine Arts Class" from January 2018 to April 2019. Osmar Osten lives and works in Chemnitz.

He signs his works with OO, e.g., Osmarosten, Mitzi Mazurka (painting brush) and XXX

Ost's work shapes the genre of mockery. It is the ironic joke that runs through his work. The subject of his pictures is the environment and so it happens that the viewer himself can become the object of ridicule. “His pictures thrive on the thick and apparently somewhat erratic, sometimes pale, sometimes bright colors and the short comments that adorn almost every canvas or cardboard and breathe life into them. In his works, Osten processes his impressions from real life: of the digitized world that takes soul away from things, of right-wing radicalism and racism that takes compassion and humanity away from people, of bizarre incidents in the arts, politics and business. "

The art historian Ingrid Mössinger on Osten: "Osmar Osten is an artist who not only sees“ around the corner ”but also thinks“ around the corner. "His pictures have a unique sense of humor, the artist chooses their motifs with the eyes of a child , but interprets it with adult irony. Osmar Osten has been creating a remarkable and much-noticed work for years. "

Since 2018, Osten has been accompanied by a film team that portrays his work and life. The film will be released in winter 2020 under the title Why am I like this? released.
