geography

The region has a size of 23,808 square kilometers and around 1.6 million inhabitants (as of 2012). There are two rainy seasons, one from October to December and the second from February to May, with two dry seasons in between. The annual rainfall is 600 to 900 millimeters, in some parts of the country even less. The temperature ranges from 18 to 31 degrees Celsius. The area is drained into Lake Victoria, the largest river is the Simiyu . The region is characterized by gently rolling plains with little vegetation, broken up locally by some miombo forests. The area is divided into three zones:

  • The north has annual rainfall of 700 to 900 millimeters and is well suited for agriculture and cattle breeding.
  • In the southeast, rainfall is less than 700 millimeters per year. There is severe soil erosion, which is reducing the yields of arable crops.
  • The south-west is more hilly, has precipitation between 700 and 800 millimeters per year and a fertile clay soil.
