The nature reserve with the registration number NSG LÜ 060 was 160  hectares in size. Of this, 85 hectares were allocated to the district of Cuxhaven and 13 hectares to the district of Stade and 62 hectares of mudflats and water areas in the Oste to the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation . The nature reserve was largely part of the FFH area “Lower Elbe” and the EU bird protection area “Lower Elbe”. The area has been under nature protection since April 26, 1975. On April 28, 2017, it opened up in the “ Hadelner and Belumer Außenendeich ” nature reserve . Responsible lower nature conservation authorities were the districts of Cuxhaven and Stade and the Lower Saxony State Office for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Protection.

The former nature reserve is north of Neuhaus (Oste) on the left-hand side of the area where the Oste flows into the Elbe . In the west it bordered directly on the nature reserve "Hadelner und Belumer Außenendeich". The former nature reserve includes tidal flats and water areas and grassland in the dyke foreland influenced by the tides . It is of great importance as a breeding, feeding and resting biotope, especially for waders and water birds .
