East Sumba ( Sumba Timur ) is a government district ( Kabupaten ) on the Indonesian island of Sumba . It is part of the East Nusa Tenggara Province .

geography

With an area of ​​7000.5 km², East Sumba takes up almost two thirds of the entire island. The capital is Waingapu , the largest city in Sumba.

The landscape is mountainous. 240,772.98 hectares are forested, but in the interior of the island there are large grasslands. Larger river systems are the Kambaniru , the Kaliongga , the Melolo , the Kadahang , the Mondu , the Rindi and the Rambangaru .

The east of Sumba is drier than the west. Average temperatures fluctuate between 25 and 29 ° C during the year. Rain falls mainly from December to March. In 2016, a total of 730.5 mm of precipitation was registered in Waingapu.

In 2016 there were 249,606 inhabitants living in 52,178 households. According to this, 36 people live on average in one square kilometer. In 2000, East Sumba had 184,475 inhabitants, in 2010 there were 231,393 inhabitants. In 2015, 4,801 children were born.

179,199 residents describe themselves as Protestant Christians, 23,282 are Catholics, 15,249 profess Islam, 399 Buddhism or Hinduism and 31,476 another religion, mostly the traditional Merapu religion. There are 34 mosques, 66 Catholic and 653 Protestant churches and two Hindu temples.

While several languages ​​are native to the west of Sumba, in the east the native tongue is almost exclusively the Malayo-Polynesian language Kambera . In the east of Sumba there are also immigrants from Sawu and Timor . Many Sawunese live with Melolo in particular.

Of the married girls and women aged 10 and over, 10.12% were 16 years old or younger when they first married, 19.87% were 17 or 18 years old, and 22.36% were 19 or 20 years old.

5.60% of the population are illiterate.

Prehistoric finds prove the early settlement of Sumba. A prehistoric skeleton and a clay jug were found in Melolo and are now in a museum in Jakarta . In Melolo, a plaque at the location near the police station reminds of this. In 2017, another five skeletons with clay jugs were discovered in Lambanapu , on the outskirts of Wainfapu. All finds are said to be 2800 to 3000 years old.

In the 2014 regional parliament elections, Golkar received the most of all parties with 26,905 votes (8 seats). Followed by the Partai Gerindra with 15,521, the PDI Perjuangan with 14,155 votes (3 seats), the Nasional Demokrat (Nasdem) with 11,881 votes and the Partai Demokrat with 10,856 votes (4 seats). Seven other parties received a total of 34,254 votes. Of the current 30 MPs, only two are women.

In the 2014 elections to the provincial parliament of East Nusa-Tenggara, PDI Perjuangan received 25,040 votes, Golkar 22,729 votes, Democrats 15,595 votes, Gerindra 14,079 votes, Nasdem 13,473 votes and the remaining seven parties together 22,235 votes.

In the 2014 elections for the national parliament of Indonesia , the Golkar won the most of all parties with 33,310 votes. Followed by the Partai Demokrat with 24,752 votes, the Nasdem party with 13,455 votes, the Partai Gerindra with 12,135 and the PDI Perjuangan with 10,514 votes. The seven other parties received a total of 18,341 votes.

Indonesia's administrative districts are run by a bupati . The current Bupati of East Sumba is called Gidion Mbilijora (as of August 2017).

Economy, transport and public institutions

Wet rice is grown on 14,150 hectares, on 5,949 hectares of dry rice corn is found on 14,284 hectares, peanuts on 1,406 hectares and cassava on 2,676 hectares. The export goods are 10,455 hectares of cashew nuts, 6,604 hectares of coconuts and, on a smaller scale, hazelnuts, areca nuts, coffee and cocoa. Cotton is planted on 2,160 hectares, on 693 hectares of jatropha .

36,599 cattle, 31,856 water buffalo and 27,042 horses are kept. 11,9967 tons of fish 3,301.6 tons of algae were caught or harvested in 2016. Most fishing boats do not have a motor.

The region is known for its ikat weaving .

In 2016, East Sumba had 1,578.91 km of roads, 971.74 km of which were paved. In 2016, 1,483 aircraft with a total of over 200,000 passengers took off and landed at Umbu Mehang Kunda Airport . Waingapu also has a port.

The district has 44 kindergartens, 259 elementary schools, 73 junior high schools and 29 senior high schools. There are three hospitals (two in Kota Waingapu and one in Kambera), 21 health centers, 79 sub-centers, 80 clinics and 555 posts available for health care. The only post office is in Waingapu. There are eight hotels and 64 restaurants for this.

35,852,202 kWh of electricity were generated in East Sumba in 2016.

The region is known for its megalithic tombs.

During the Pasola ritual, hundreds of men from horses throw blunt spears at each other. Although the tips are missing, serious injuries and deaths often result. The celebrations are held in several locations from February to March. The exact date for this depends on the arrival of the little Nyale fish on the coast and is determined by the priests. The fighting usually begins on the coast and then moves to the interior of the island.
