Osvald Tooming

Osvald Tooming (born January 13 . Jul / 26. January  1914 greg. In Jädivere , Vigala , † 6. June 1992 in Tartu ) was an Estonian writer .

life and work

Osvald Tooming studied after graduating from middle school in 1932 from 1935 to 1939 law at the University of Tartu . From 1934 to 1941 he worked as a journalist in Rakvere , including 1936 to 1940 for the newspaper Virumaa Teataja .

In 1941/42 he was imprisoned during the German occupation of Estonia.

From 1945 to 1947 Tooming was an editor at the communist newspaper Rahva Haäl and from 1947 to 1950 at the literary magazine Looming . In 1949 he was awarded the State Prize of the Estonian SSR .

Subsequently, however, the supposedly loyal writer fell out of favor with the Stalinist authorities. From 1951 to 1955 he sat in the gulag and lived in exile in Kirov Oblast . After returning to Estonia, he worked for a long time as a freelance writer in Haljala before settling in Viljandi and then near Kolga-Jaani .

Osvald Tooming made his debut as a writer in the 1940s. In addition to an extensive journalistic work, he has also presented numerous short stories, novels and dramas. He mainly deals with rural life with its human relationships and fates. He has edited numerous classics for the theater ( Anton Hansen Tammsaare , Alexandre Dumas , Aleksis Kivi , Eduard Vilde , Charlotte Brontë , Jakob Mändmets , Henry Fielding and others) and also written scripts.

Osvald Tooming was co-founder of the Estonian Nature Conservation Association ( Eesti Looduskaitse Selts ) in 1966 .

Osvald Tooming is the father of the Estonian film director and photographer Peeter Tooming (1939–1997) and the director and actor Jaan Tooming (* 1946).
