Ottilie von Faber-Castell - A courageous woman is a German television film in two parts from 2019. Both parts were presented together on September 14, 2019 in the first . The biography shows the life of the entrepreneur Ottilie von Faber-Castell from her youth in 1893 to her divorce in 1916 during the First World War .

action

After the death of her father, grandfather Lothar von Faber entrusts Ottilie with the management of the AW Faber company after his death. He dies in 1896; initially the widow Ottilie senior acts as guardian of Ottilie, who is still underage, for two years. In 1898 Ottilie married Count Alexander zu Castell-Rüdenhausen, after he had secretly dueled with Philipp Brand von Neidstein, another contender for Ottilie.

After an intrigue between grandmother and husband, Alexander becomes managing director and partner. When first Alexander and then Ottilie (with Philipp) cheat, the marriage becomes increasingly difficult. Their first son also dies while his parents are in Paris on business. In 1914, Alexander had to go to the First World War . During a vacation at home, Ottilie announces that she wants to get a divorce. With her last belongings she moves into a new life with Philipp Brand von Neidstein.

criticism

“Ultimately, there are only a few scenes in which Ottilie can gain stature as an entrepreneur, but the much more extensive love drama naturally also touches on emancipatory issues. […] The melodramatic entanglement is considerable and provides romantic entertainment with a tragic note. "

“The director Garde doesn't work against the screenwriter Garde, she looks for and finds the right images for the template. [...] Even if the golden sun likes to vomit over the headquarters and the Walle-Walle music makes every pencil burst. What keeps the production away from the melo kitsch is the cast. Kristin Suckow easily plays the role of the title character, she is believable when she is a resolute fighter, she is believable when she is a romantic woman. Johannes Zirner, an Eleonore Weisgerber and a Hans [sic] Wegener also follow these standards. And yet it would have been a win if the great Martin Wuttke hadn't had to play his independent, individually shaped clan chief Lothar von Faber into the grave so early. "
