Otto Abel (historian)
Heinrich Friedrich Otto Abel (born January 22, 1824 in Klosterreichenbach , † October 28, 1854 in Leonberg ) was a German historian .
Life
1842 Otto Abel studied at the universities of Tübingen , Jena , Heidelberg , Bonn and Berlin majoring in History ; u. a. with Friedrich Christoph Dahlmann and Leopold von Ranke . He dedicated his first book to the former: Macedonia before King Philipp Leipzig in 1847, in which he demonstrated the Hellenic origin of the Macedonians .
During his studies he became a member of the Germania Tübingen fraternity (1842), the Burgkeller Jena fraternity (1844) and the Fridericia Bonn fraternity (1845).
Politically interested and committed, Abel was enthusiastic about the revolution in 1848 and he gave it lively expression in one writing: The new German Reich and its Kaiser Berlin 1848, in which he stood up for the Prussian Empire. His painful disappointment with the behavior of Friedrich Wilhelm IV is reflected in the allusions to the present in Theodat, König der Ostgoten (Stuttgart 1855) published from his estate .
Through Minister Heinrich Alexander von Arnim , Abel got a job in the Prussian diplomatic service, but in 1850 he resigned from this office. He settled in Berlin, where he worked for the Monumenta Germaniae Historica ; he worked on a number of Swabian historical sources from the Staufer period . 1851 habilitated himself as a lecturer of History in Bonn, but died already on 28 October 1854 in Leonberg a chest ailment.
reception
Abel had set himself a comprehensive account of the history of Emperor Friedrich II , the Staufer, as his life's work, but only the monograph King Philipp der Hohenstaufer Berlin 1852, which was to serve as an introduction to the work, and the posthumously promising one Fragment of Kaiser Otto IV and King Friedrich II (ed. Von Wegele, Berlin. 1856) have been published. The writings were based on thorough source research.
