Otto Karl Berg
Otto Karl Berg , also Otto Carl Berg (born August 18, 1815 in Stettin , † November 20, 1866 in Berlin ) was a German botanist and pharmacognostic . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " O.Berg "; earlier the abbreviation " OCBerg " was also in use.
Live and act
Berg was born the son of a doctor in Szczecin . After the death of his parents he came to Demmin as an apprentice pharmacist . In 1838 he went to Berlin to study pharmaceuticals , which he finished after two semesters with an exam. He caught up with the Abitur and began studying at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität zu Berlin in 1842 , where he was awarded a Dr. phil. received his doctorate and habilitated in botany and pharmacognosy in 1849 . In 1848 he married Caroline Albertine Florentine Witthaus, with whom he had six children.
In Berlin he became a private lecturer in 1850 , a member of the senior examination commission in 1856 and an associate professor in 1862 . Berg is considered one of the greatest pharmacognostics of his time and the founder of pharmacoanatomy. In botany, Berg mainly dealt with medicinal plants. In addition, the myrtle family was one of his research areas. Some of the first descriptions come from him, such as Orthostemon sellowianus, later renamed Acca sellowiana ( Brazilian guava ) by Carl Burret in 1856 .
Berg died of a lung disease in 1866.
