Otto Kinne (born August 30, 1923 in Bremerhaven ; † March 3, 2015 in Oldendorf (Luhe) ) was a German marine biologist who dealt with marine ecology, zoology , physiology of marine animals , water pollution and problems of bioethics , and in 1984 with Karl Ritter von Frisch medal of the German Zoological Society (DZG).
Life
After high school he graduated in zoology , botany and oceanography at the University of Kiel and placed there on March 19, 1952 his promotion to Doctor of Science with a dissertation on "Experimental studies on the biology, ecology and physiology by Gammarus duebeni LILIJ: A contribution to the knowledge of d. Brackish water organisms ” .
Subsequently, he was a scientific assistant at the University of Kiel, where he also obtained his habilitation in 1956 with a habilitation thesis on the subject of “On the influence of salt content and temperature on growth, shape and reproduction in the hydroid polyp Cordylophora caspia <Pallas>, Thecata, Clavidae: 1. Communication about the influence of the salt content on growth and Development of marine, brackish water and limnological organisms ” took place. After a year as a visiting scientist at the Zoological Faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he became an assistant professor in 1958 and then an associate professor at the University of Toronto from 1960 to 1962 .
After his return to Germany in 1962, Kinne became administrative director and professor of the Biological Institute Helgoland and worked there until 1984. In this function he was also the organizer of marine biology symposia and led the ceremony on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the institution in 1967. In 1967 he was also appointed professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.
In 1979 he founded Inter-Research, an international center for research and scientific publications in Oldendorf (Luhe) and in 1984 an International Ecology Institute , of which he has been director ever since. He also founded the international journals Marine Biology, Marine Ecology Progress Series, Diseases of Aquatic Organisms, Climate Research, Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Ethics in Science and Environmental Politics.
In 1992 he was also the founder of the Otto Kinne Foundation , which awards grants to young ecologists from Russia , the Commonwealth of Independent States and Eastern Europe . Between 1992 and 2001 he was President of the Nathanael Pringsheim Society for the Promotion of the Biological Institute Helgoland e. V. in Hamburg .
He was also the founder of the International Ecoethical Union in 1998 because of concerns about harmful tendencies in anthropogenic environmental degradation .

In addition to his teaching and research activities, he also published several specialist books such as "Cultivation of marine organisms and its importance for marine biology" (1973), "Protection of life in the sea" (1980), "Diseases of marine animals" (5 volumes, 1980–1990), “Diseases of marine organisms” (1984), “Searching in the park: struggling for a new understanding of the world” (1996) and “Electronic publishing in science: changes and risks” (1999).
In 1984 he was awarded the Karl Ritter von Frisch Medal of the German Zoological Society for his work in the field of marine and marine ecology.
Otto Kinne also became Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of India , Honorary Member of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom , Honorary Professor of the Biological Department of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2003), Honorary Member of the Russian Hydrobiological Society and Honorary Member of the Far East Department of the Marine Biological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2004).
