Literary work

Münther made his debut at the end of the 19th century with travelogues that he sent to Estonian newspapers from his hikes in the Crimea. His only collection of novels (1906) contains critical-realistic life images from everyday life. Since Münther was politically influenced by social democracy and Marxism , Stalinist literary criticism was later able to describe him as a “forerunner of proletarian literature” and a “pioneer of socialist art”.

Mainly, however, Münther concentrated on literary criticism and dealt with Western European and Russian literature. This showed u. a. the influence of the literary historical work of Georg Brandes . On the other hand, he also appeared as a severe critic of Noor-Eesti .
