Otto Singer junior

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Otto Singer junior (born September 14, 1863 in Dresden , † January 8, 1931 in Leipzig ) was a German Kapellmeister , composer and author of piano reductions .

Live and act

Otto Singer spent his childhood and youth in the United States of America . His musical training began at the Cincinnati College of Music, where his father Otto Singer senior taught from 1873 to 1892. Returning to Germany, Otto Singer junior studied in Leipzig with Hubert Léonard , in Berlin with Joseph Joachim and Friedrich Kiel and in Munich with Joseph Rheinberger . He took the violin , piano and composition subjects .

In 1888 he was musical assistant at the Bayreuth Festival, 1888/89 conductor of the Heidelberger Musikverein and 1890–92 conductor of the Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein . In Cologne he was Heinrich Zöllner's successor as a teacher of theory and sight reading at the Cologne Conservatory . From 1897 he switched to the Stern Conservatory for Music in Berlin. After various intermediate stops (including in Breslau, Munich and Kufstein), he finally settled in Leipzig from 1922.

His Concerto for Piano and Orchestra , A major , op. 8, was premiered on October 21, 1905 in Ferruccio Busoni's Berlin concert series with José Vianna da Motta as the soloist. Carl Halir and Henri Petri had his concert piece for violin and orchestra, op. 6, in their repertoire.

Today Otto Singer is mostly known only as a “ piano dodger ”, especially from the works of Richard Strauss , who had assigned him this task almost exclusively since 1891. In addition, Richard Strauss also valued him as an employee on various projects. Otto Singer took over the musical rehearsals for concerts of the Berlin Tonkünstler Orchestra, supported Richard Strauss in the processing and editing of Berlioz's instrumentation theory , arranged the accompanying music for the silent film version of the Rosenkavalier together with Carl Alwin and orchestrated Schumann's Carneval on the initiative of Richard Strauss Time as director of the Vienna Opera for Heinrich Kröller's Ballet Carneval: dance scenes to Schumann's music. Richard Strauss's letters to Otto Singer were auctioned in Munich in 1987. Some letters from Richard Strauss to Otto Singer can be found today in the Kurt Taut Collection of the Leipzig University Library. The correspondence between Ferruccio Busoni and Otto Singer is in the estate of Ferruccio Busoni at the Berlin State Library.

Otto Singer's brother was the art historian Hans Wolfgang Singer .
