Otto von Baditz , also Otto Baditz , (born March 19, 1849 in Magyarkeresztúr ; † April 21, 1936 there ) was a Hungarian painter .

Life

Otto von Baditz was born in 1849 as the son of a landowner. After graduating from high school, he studied law in Pressburg (now Bratislava ) and attended painting courses with Károly Steinacker in Sopron . Soon he decided to devote himself entirely to painting. In 1870 he began studying at the Vienna Art Academy with Vilmos Engerth and from 1876 he studied at the Munich Art Academy with Wilhelm von Diez . Until 1890 von Baditz lived mainly in Munich and Dachau and ran a joint studio with Béla Spányizog . In 1890 he went to Budapest . There he was temporarily director of the National Salon . From 1911 he lived in seclusion on his property in Tótkeresztúr (today Križevci , Slovenia ).

Von Baditz worked primarily as a genre painter, but was also a sought-after portraitist . His favorite subjects were mainly scenes from the life of the Hungarian farmers. His works are influenced by the Munich School , but also by painters like Gustave Courbet . Von Baditz also worked as an illustrator for Hungarian magazines and designed a volume of poetry by the Hungarian poet Josef Kiss .
