The Ottoberg ( 520  m ) is an eastern foothill of the Weberberg ( 711  m nm ) in the Zittau Mountains . Its unwooded rock summit lies in the Waltersdorf district in the municipality of Großschönau .

location

The Ottoberg is located southwest of Waltersdorf between the valleys of the Pfarrbach and Kohlflössel , both of which originate in the headwaters of the Weberborn to the west. To the northeast is the Sängerhöhe ( 497  m ). To the east the mountain falls to the valley of the Waltersdorfer Dorfbach . The Butterberg ( 510  m ) rises to the east, the Sonneberg ( 627  m ) to the south-east, the Lausche ( 793  m ) to the south and the Dreiecker ( 673  m ) to the south-west .

The mountain is surrounded in the north by Pilzdörfel and Herrenwalde , in the northeast by Altwaltersdorf, in the southeast by Neuwaltersdorf and Neue Sorge .

description

The Ottoberg is the southern and highest peak of a ridge that extends in a north-easterly direction to Kirschhübel ( 442  m ) and is largely made up of meadowland.

The summit rises approx. 40 m above the valley of the Kohlflössel. It consists of lapillite tuffs from coarse basalt bombs up to the size of a head. The Ottoberg is traversed by a short basalt passage and a phonolite stock.

The tuff of the Ottoberges is important for determining the age of the Lusatian thrust . The view, which was widespread until the second half of the 20th century, that this tectonic line existed before volcanism, has been refuted because the tuffs are clearly visible against the sandstone and must therefore be older than the thrust.

The summit offers a wide view with a view of the Waltersdorfer Tal and the Zittau Mountains. From Waltersdorf the ascent takes place on an unmarked path from the Arschkerbe over the heath, from the opposite side a branch leads from the Eisgasse to the Ottoberg.

Surname

The name of the mountain is derived from the Waltersdorfer landowner Hans Otto.
