The Waltersdorfer Dorfbach , formerly also called Pfarrfluss , is a right-hand tributary of the Lausur with a length of approx. 6 km in the municipality of Großschönau in the east Saxon district of Görlitz .

description

The stream rises north of the Waltersdorfer Pass in the notch between Lausche (793 m above sea level) and Sonneberg (627 m above sea level) in the Waltersdorf locality of Sonneberg in the Zittau Mountains . The stream then flows north through Neuwaltersdorf. Between the Butterberg (510 m above sea level) and the Ottoberg (520 m above sea level), the Sängerhöhe (497 m above sea level) and the Kirschhübel (442 m above sea level) it forms a deep valley in which Oberwaltersdorf is located . The Dorfbach then flows through Altwaltersdorf and reaches the Großschönau basin and hill country. Its lower course leads through the Neuschönauer Busch to Neuschönau . The Waltersdorfer Dorfbach flows into the Lausur in Neuschönau opposite the Neuschönauer Brettmühle at the foot of the Finkenhübels .

The Waltersdorfer Dorfbach has been expanded for most of its course and enclosed in natural stone walls, numerous bridges and footbridges cross it. Only on the almost one kilometer long section through the Neuschönauer Busch is it natural.

Mills and factories

The water power of the Dorfbach was previously used to drive several mills.

  • Obermühle or slate mill : It was established in 1709 and ceased operations in 1908.
  • Mittelmühle or Hähnelmühle : The oldest of the Waltersdorfer mills was built around 1400. In the years 1614/15 the wooden structure was removed and rebuilt in stone. It was later expanded to include a bakery and a sawmill. The bakery was given up around 1930, and the sawmill too in 1945. In 1956 the mill was transformed into a folklore and mill museum.
  • Niedermühle : The mill, which was built in 1666, was shut down in 1890 and later used as a cabinet maker.

Flood

On August 7, 2010, heavy rainfall in Waltersdorf and Neuschönau flooded properties on the Dorfbach. Stream walls, bridges and footbridges collapsed, and Kretschamplatz in Waltersdorf became impassable.
