action

In the year 709 AD, a spaceship crashes on Norwegian soil. Of the two crew members, only the humanoid alien Kainan survives , who uses the on-board computer to quickly find out about the residents of the area and assimilates their language for communication purposes .

He soon arrives in a destroyed, burned-down village, but finds no bodies. Shortly afterwards, he is captured by a group of Vikings around Wulfric and taken to their fortified camp with King Rothgar. They suspect him of having destroyed the village of their archenemy Gunnar when they found him there. But Kainan does not remain a prisoner for long, because when an unknown animal begins to terrify the people, they go hunting together and Kainan is able to save King Rothgar's life in a fight against a bear. But while everyone celebrates the victory, Kainan warns that the attacker is a Moorwen , a being that has secretly traveled with him and is now hungry and leaves a trail of destruction.

As it turns out later, Kainan belongs to a people who conquered and settled a planet originally inhabited by the Moorwen . The Moorwen were almost exterminated on their planet, but one specimen survived undetected and attacked the settlers in the absence of the protection forces, destroyed the settlement and killed all residents, including Kainan's wife and son. When the returned Kainan wanted to bring the dead to his home planet, the Moorwen sneaked on board, caused the accident and escaped to earth in the crash. Kainan feels responsible for the people killed by the Moorwen and confides in Rothgar's daughter Freya with his story. The two begin to develop feelings for each other.

King Gunnar, meanwhile, wants to take revenge on King Rothgar and Wulfric. At first Gunnar does not believe that a "dragon" has destroyed his village and vows to destroy Rothgar and his village. A first attack by his clan can be repulsed. On the way back to his settlement, he is attacked by the Moorwen himself and is forced to retreat to Wulfric's village. From now on, the Vikings fight together and, under the leadership of Kainan, plan a trap, which the Moorwen cannot kill in the end. In addition, the mother animal gave birth to a cub that can sneak through the well into the village and kill King Rothgar.

The Vikings begin evacuating the village as it is no longer safe. Only a small group eventually sets out to kill the monster. For this purpose, new swords and daggers are forged from the metal of the crashed spaceship, which are able to injure the being more effectively. Finally there is a showdown , with Wulfric, Rothgar's legitimate successor, also losing his life. Kainan can kill the Moorwen . He now sees the time has come to be picked up by his own with the help of an emergency transmitter. But at the last moment he decides differently and destroys the emergency transmitter, where he is again observed by Freya, who now knows his secret. He marries Freya, adopts the little orphan boy Eric and is crowned the new king.

backgrounds

Emergence

McCain had the first idea for Outlander back in 1992 when he was a student at NYU . Originally he wanted to make a modern film adaptation of the epic heroic poem Beowulf , but the idea of a monster in the times of the Vikings did not seem credible enough to him. It was only when he met his future co-author Dirk Blackman that the idea of converting both hero and monster into aliens started rolling. On the advice of his agents, he finally deleted the names Beowulf and Grendel from his script .

Financing and box office

A first self-financed film adaptation failed due to the budget and should be realized with the help of Weta Workshop in New Zealand . The Weinstein Company's entry into the project eventually kicked off production, and McCain and producer Barrie M. Osborne went to work on a reduced budget. Outlander received the capital it needed from the German VIP media fund. The roughly 50 million dollar production only grossed around 7 million dollars at the box office and was therefore a financial flop.

Reviews

“The attempt to combine science fiction, fantasy and historical films with one another, which is not without charm, fails the moment the film concentrates on the Viking subject without much ado. Passable entertainment with impressive effects. "
