Pál Békés

Pál Békés (born March 27, 1956 in Budapest , † May 28, 2010 there ) was a Hungarian writer .

Life

After visiting the Miklós Radnóti - Gymnasium (ELTE Radnóti Miklós Gyakorlóiskola) he studied from 1975 to 1980 Hungarian language and English literature at the Eotvos Lorand University . He then worked as a teacher for Hungarian and English from 1980 to 1981 .

Between 1987 and 2001 he was an author and screenwriter of several film and television series. Later, between 1994 and 1996, he was the director of the Studio for Literature, Art and Theater (IKSZ) of the TV channel Magyar Televízió . He then worked from 1997 to 2000 as the editor of theater and literary journals .

In 2000 he became president of the Hungarian delegation and a member of the International Committee for Young People's Books (Gyermekkönyvek Nemzetközi Tanácsa) and in 2004 also curator of the Magyar Magic series of events in Great Britain . In 2005 he was also a member of the jury at the literature festival A Nagy Könyv (The Big Book), in which more than 400,000 people voted Géza Gárdonyi's novel Egri csillagok (Stars of Eger) as the most popular book in Hungary alongside a TOP 100 of the most popular books .

He wrote novels, plays and children's literature. His work includes several books, including collections of short stories, radio plays and a whole series of plays, nine of which have already been performed. His children's book “The Klutzky Magician” has been translated into Italian and Russian, and “Fritebite” has also been translated into French.

Békés was also a translator of the works of Vladimir Nabokov , Anthony Burgess and Woody Allen into Hungarian and wrote in 1996 with the jazz - saxophonist and composer László Dés under the title A Dzsungel konyve a Musical after the Jungle Book .

Békés has received several awards, including the Tibor Déry Prize in 1998 , the Attila József Prize in 2000 and the Sándor Márai Literature Prize in 2009 . In addition, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (A Dzsungel Koenyve) in 2006 .
