Püspökszilágy [pyʃpøksilaːɟ] is a Hungarian community in the county Vác in Pest County .

Geographical location

Püspökszilágy is located about 34 kilometers northeast of the capital Budapest on the small river Szilágyi-patak . The neighboring municipality of Kisnémedi is one kilometer west of the village.

Storage of radioactive waste

In December 1976, a near-surface repository for low and medium level radioactive waste that does not come from nuclear power plants was put into operation. The waste from an old warehouse in Solymár was brought to Püspökszilágy. It is operated by the German company DBE Technology GmbH in Peine .

The repository in Püspökszilágy, which has a capacity of 5000 cubic meters, was built in clayey Quaternary deposits. The storage capacity is already largely exhausted. It has storage rooms. For a time, from 1988 to 1996, nuclear power plant waste was also stored there. Today, the waste from the Paks nuclear power plant is temporarily stored on the power plant site until a separate repository is available. This is also required because the repository cannot be expanded.

In 2007, the construction of a repository for other low and medium level radioactive waste began in Bátaapáti .

A few years ago the Hungarian safety authority ordered the waste to be retrieved. Since then, the waste has no longer been fixed with cement. The facility only serves as an interim storage facility.
