The kkStB 178 was a tank locomotive series of the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) Austria for local rail traffic , which was also procured by various private local railways in Austria.

history

When, at the end of the 19th century, traffic on the Schneebergbahn (SchBB), which was built primarily to transport coal from the Grünbach mining area , increased so much due to the increasing tourism on the Hochschneeberg , which could be reached by cogwheel train the existing double and triple coupled branch line locomotives were no longer sufficient, Karl Gölsdorf was commissioned to design a new locomotive.

Gölsdorf created a powerful four-coupled Tender - An engine that even smaller radii went through informal than the old six-coupled. Krauss in Linz delivered two test machines, which were given the numbers 21 and 22 and the names “WILLENDORF” and “KLAUS”. After the Vienna-Aspang Railway (EWA) took over the operation of the Schneeberg Railway in 1899, it ordered a further eight of these locomotives. The ten existing pieces were classified as row  IVd with the numbers 71 to 80.

The modified angle lever control used by Gölsdorf on these machines is named after him. Although it worked, it was not widely used in Austria or anywhere else in Europe. In the USA, however, it was further developed into the Baker control .

The kkStB procured a total of 211 units of these series 178 machines for its branch lines by 1918  , which were also used at times on the Vienna light rail . In addition to Krauss, they were also supplied by the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik , the Lokomotivfabrik Floridsdorf and the Bohemian-Moravian Machine Factory . In contrast to the SchBB / EWA locomotives, the state railroad version naturally had a Kobel chimney and also differed from these in some other details. Depending on the local conditions, the machines also had more or less supplies, so that the service weight differed.

After the First World War, the BBÖ left 66 units , the ČSD received 105 units as series 422.0 , Yugoslavia listed them as SHS / JDŽ 52 , Poland as PKP  TKp11 and Italy as FS  893 . Some machines also came to Romania, where they did not have their own series number.

The kkStB 178 in today's Austria

In Austria, the 178 series continued to be built for both the BBÖ and private railways until 1924. As a result, after the nationalization of the private railways, the number of 178s increased to 85. In detail, these were the following machines:

The 178,900 was the only twin locomotive in this series.

After the annexation of Austria by the German Reich, the Reichsbahn classified the 178 as 92.2211-2294 . The 178.900 got the number 92.2201 . In the course of the war, some locomotives of this series came to the DR.

After the end of the Second World War , 50 units of the 92 series remained with the ÖBB . The twin locomotive 92.2201 was classified as ÖBB 192.01 , stationed in Linz and retired in 1965. The 92s were eliminated from the ÖBB by 1970. The 92.2256 came to WLB in 1950 in exchange for the 1D1 tank locomotive No. 74.

The series was used by the following Austrian private railways: Railway Wien-Aspang (including Schneebergbahn ), Niederösterreichische Landesbahnen , Montafonerbahn , Steiermärkische Landesbahnen , Wiener Lokalbahnen and the military railway Felixdorf - Blumau .

Four representatives of this series have survived in Austria:

  • Pre-production locomotive 92.2220 as a memorial in Puchberg am Schneeberg
  • The 92.2231, which was on the Montafonerbahn with tourist trains for several years, is in the Schwechat Railway Museum .
  • The 92.2271 is owned by the Martinsberger Lokalbahnverein and has been used in front of museum trains on the Schwarzenau – Zwettl – Martinsberg local railway since 2010 . (Your number is only fictitious, however, it is locomotive 72 of the Wiener Lokalbahnen. The real 92.2271 was retired on May 9, 1968.)
  • The 92.2234 has been preserved in a scrap-ripe condition in the Strasshof Railway Museum .

105 locomotives of the 178 series remained with the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) after 1918 . Another 12 locomotives were added later through the nationalization of various local railways. The locomotives were given the new series number 422.0 from 1924. Since the locomotives proved their worth, the design of the kkStB 178 was the basis for the development of the 331.0 , 354.1 , 423.0 and 433.0 series .

In 1970 the last class 422.0 locomotives were retired. Several ČSD machines were preserved for posterity, some of them as operational museum locomotives. The 422.025 (formerly kkStB 178.49 " ARCIVÉVODA KAREL ") is preserved as a museum by the National Technical Museum in Prague .
