The Paapsand is a survey ship of the Federal Republic of Germany.

history

The ship, the construction of which was commissioned in July 1997 by the then special department for mechanical engineering in Brake (today's technical department of the Waterways and Shipping Directorate Northwest), was built in 1998/1999. The hull was built under construction number 97/1/2602 at the Jantar shipyard in Kaliningrad , Russia . The keel was laid on May 5, 1998, the launch on April 28, 1999. The ship was equipped by Ms. Fassmer in Berne / Motzen. Completion took place in May 1999. The ship's godmother was Elke Ferner, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.

The ship is used by the Emden Waterways and Shipping Authority for direction finding tasks, mainly on the Ems .

It is named after the sandbank in the mouth of the Ems in front of Delfzijl .

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by a six - cylinder four - stroke diesel engine made by Cummins (type: KTA 19 M) with an output of 447  kW . The engine acts on a fixed propeller via a gearbox . The ship reaches a speed of 12  knots . The ship has a bow thruster with 54 kW power.

Two generators with an apparent power of 32.5 kVA each  are available for the power supply .

For conducting water depth measurements ( soundings ) the ship is equipped with a vertical echo sounder (single-beam echo sounder) and a satellite-based positioning system equipped.
