structure

The operator is the Franz Nabl Institute for Literary Research of the Karl Franzens University Graz , which is located in the same building and has a library on site. The Franz Nabl Institute administers several bequests and bequests (including those of Franz Nabl , Gerhard Roth and Barbara Frischmuth ), as well as manuscripts, correspondence and collections from authors such as Wolfgang Bauer , Emil Breisach , Günter Eichberger , Reinhard P. Gruber , Klaus Hoffer , Gert Jonke , or Alfred Kolleritsch .

The Germanist Klaus Kastberger has been head of the literary house and the Franz Nabl Institute since 2015 . Kastberger is professor for modern German literature at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz. In October 2019, his appointment as head of the municipal council was decided until 2025.

program

The Literaturhaus Graz follows the tradition of the Forum Stadtpark Graz, which for decades under its former President Alfred Kolleritsch was considered an important literary center. This was the direction in which the first literary house program focus “Speech Music” pointed in the opening year 2003, which among others focused on Peter Handke , Elfriede Jelinek , Gert Jonke , Werner Schwab and Gerhard Rühm - all authors who were familiar with Forum Stadtpark and von Kolleritsch published literary journal "Manuskripte" and the language-critical approach to literature that has shaped it. Gerhard Roth, for whose prelude there was an exhibition and a publication (Gerhard Roth: Orkus. Im Schattenreich derzeichen), was also considered a “forum author” beginning in the 1970s.

In 2005 there was a focus at the Literaturhaus Graz on the 100th birthday of Elias Canetti . Canetti was friends with Franz Nabl ("... and when I first came to Graz in 1965, I visited Franz Nabl and developed a deep inclination for him ", Canetti in his speech on the award of the Franz Nabl Prize or the Literature Prize of the City of Graz , 1975). Years before his international literary breakthrough, he was in contact with the Forum Stadtpark authors (in 1965, 1968 and 1969 Canetti readings were held in the Forum Stadtpark).

In 2007, Wolfgang Bauer, one of the “stars” from the literary heyday of the Forum Stadtpark, was honored by a publication by the Literaturhaus Graz (Wolfgang Bauer: “I am a bad child”, dramas, prose poetry from four decades).

The main focus of the program, however, is on the current offer of readings, which has so far brought an internationally mixed series of authors to Graz. At the same time, space is also given to the current Graz literary scene with its five literary magazines (clearings, manuscripts, perspective, typist , Sterz), the Droschl literature publisher , the youth literature workshop and the UniT dramatists' workshop. Every year in November, the Bookolino children's book festival takes place in the Literaturhaus Graz.

Former Palais Mayr-Melnhof

Literaturhaus Graz, courtyard side

The Elisabethstraße 30 building, used by the Literaturhaus Graz, was once the city palace of the Mayr-Melnhof family and was built in 1852. In 1894/95 renovations were carried out according to plans by August Gunolt. The facade is designed in the late historic neo-baroque style. It comes from Rudolf Vital. A Neo-Regency stucco decoration has been preserved in the interior.

It was used as a cultural center in Graz from 1966 to 2000 (from 1972 to 2000 under the direction of Otto Breicha ). For the reopening on May 7, 2003, the house was completely renovated by the Graz architects' office Riegler Riewe (Florian Riegler and Roger Riewe) and an extension was added on the courtyard side. This houses the large event hall of the Literaturhaus Graz, as well as formerly the Café "Orange", which is now called Schrille Grille. The latter is not to be regarded as a “literature café” in the narrower sense, especially the evening bar, in conjunction with the traditional “Kulturhauskeller” in the same building, attracts a large number of students who tend not to mix with the guests of the Literaturhaus.
