The American pampas grass ( Cortaderia selloana ) or silver pampas grass is a species of the sweet grass family (Poaceae).

description

The American pampas grass is an evergreen perennial, herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 45 to 300 centimeters. This clump plant is usually dioecious. The eyrie consists of 1 to over 2 meters long, densely packed, blue-green leaves . The leaf blades are overhanging and sharply rough at the edge. The ligule consists of a row of hairs. The dense or loosely standing panicle is long, egg-shaped, silvery white or less often yellowish, reddish or purple, later feathery and 30 to 100 centimeters long. The spikelets are 3- to 7-flowered and 15 to 18 millimeters long.

The flowering period lasts from August to November.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 72.

Occurrence

The American pampas grass occurs in South America in southern Brazil , in Uruguay , Paraguay , Chile and Argentina in the pampas on sandy and alluvial soils.

use

The American pampas grass is used variously as an ornamental plant as a specimen shrub, cut flower and for dry bouquets. It has been in culture since 1843 at the latest. There are some cultivated forms, for example with a pink panicle. Important varieties in Central Europe are Andes Silver , Pumila , Patagonia and Sunningdale Silver .

distribution

Pampas grass is very productive and can grow in a wide variety of environments and climates . Outside of its original range, it is considered opportunistic, overgrown from gardens and establishing itself along coastal dunes, roadsides and in deserted areas where native vegetation has been removed or disturbed. It is commonly found in humid areas with strong sunlight. As a seedling , it is sensitive to drought and frost, but becomes increasingly tolerant with age. It is considered an invasive plant in some areas of Europe ( Spain , Portugal , Italy , France , Great Britain ) and the western United States ( California , Hawaii ) as well as Australia and New Zealand . In France, a total ban on the production and sale of this plant throughout the territory is planned.
