action

On February 10, 1942, the British trade center in Singapore was attacked. According to the motto “women and children first”, they are brought to Europe on a ship. But the goal remains unachieved. The ship is bombed and sinks. Adrienne Pargiter and two other women are able to escape to mainland Sumatra , which is under the control of Japan . They are captured with many other shipwrecked women and a number of children and taken to a prison camp. Although they have to cope there with the tropical climate, poor housing and a minimum of food, the class barriers have not yet been lifted. But very soon they realize that they can only survive if they stick together. A choir emerged from this idea, led by Adrienne Pargiter. With the help of a friend, she rewrites pieces intended for orchestra to a cappella . With the help of music, which gives them strength and employment, they struggle through years of imprisonment. When their guards announced the end of the war, most of the women survived.

Reviews

Cinema magazine wrote that the film was a "pathetic but superbly played drama" and "a moving piece of mind about the power of music".

“A film made based on an authentic story that largely saves suffering and misery in favor of a pathetic-sentimental staging. The clichéd figure drawing and the insensitive handling of the historical context are equally responsible for the failure of the film. "
