The Parcoy district is located in the Pataz Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district has an area of ​​278 km². The 2017 census counted 18,730 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 9226, in 2007 it was 16,437. The administrative seat of the district is the 3126  m high village of Parcoy with 1164 inhabitants (as of 2017). Parcoy is 34 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Tayabamba . Near the main town Parcoy are the small towns and villages Llacuabamba with 4857 inhabitants, Retamas with 1807 inhabitants and La Soledad with 1376 inhabitants.

A festival is held in La Soledad on the third Sunday in September in honor of the Nuestra Señora de los Dolores .

Mining is an important industry in the Parcoy district. Gold is mined. The mining companies Consorcio Minero Horizonte SA (CMHSA) and Minera Aurífera Retamas SA (MARSA) operate mines in the vicinity of Parcoy.

Geographical location

The Parcoy district is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the central north of the Pataz province. The district extends over the upper river valley of the Río Parcoy , a right tributary of the Río Marañón . In the west, the district extends to the Río Marañón. In the east the watershed runs to the catchment area of the Río Huallaga further east .
