geography

The parish covers the central south of the island of Antigua . It extends approximately 7 km north-south from the Central Plain to the south coast around Falmouth Bay , and 9 km west-east from the eastern Shekerley Mountains to Willoughby Bay . With almost 48 km² it has 19 of the land area of the state and 16 of the island of Antigua.

The population is a little under 9,000, a good 110 of the state residents and 18 of those Antiguas, of which 8,000 are locals (population, 90%). The Parish has around 2700 households, the average size is a three-person household (2011: 2.8), which is slightly below the national average (3.0). The population density of around 190 inhabitants per km² is above the national average (around 150), but comparatively low for the main island of Antigua (almost 250): the flat north of the island is much more densely populated. Most of the Parish, the entire hilly to mountainous south, is Nelson's Dockyard National Park with 41 km².

Regional centers are All Saints inland, which is the second largest city after the capital St. John's, and the port region of Falmouth / English Harbor on the tourist coast (Falmouth is the historic capital ).

history

The parishes are the highest administrative units of the monarchy, they represent the historical parish districts that are widespread in the Anglo-Saxon area as a rural administrative division . The main church of this parish was today's church of St. Paul's Rectory in Falmouth .

Historically, the region was divided into the Falmouth Division (Falmouth, today's Liberta and Swetes) with the Ten Acres Lands (state property around English Harbor, which was parceled out for small farms), Rendezvous Bay Division (the western hill country behind Rendezvous Bay) and Willoughby Bay Division (around Bethesda). Both the West and parts of the former Willoughby Bay Division were in 1873 also administratively as Parish of Saint Paul confirmed (Parish Boundaries Act) .

After slavery was abolished in 1834, Liberta was the first settlement for freedmen here. The region was particularly hard hit by the Great Antilles earthquake in 1843 , so that there were several emigration, especially to Free Town . Around 1850, the Parish included the property ( Estates ) Blake, bodkins, Burke, Cochrane, Delaps, Folly, Laroaches, Lucas, Mathews, Morris Loobiys, Patterson, Richmond, Thomas, Tyrell, Rendezvous Bay, Buck Horn and the already abandoned Barters and Dimsdales - the farms consistently existed as localities until the 1950s, sometimes until today, otherwise they became the core of a settlement - as well as the places English Harbor, Falmouth, The Ridge, Ffreys (today St. Phillip), Victoria, Bethesda, Grace Hill , Liberta, Buckshorns, Edwards, Sweets, Jenny Bush, Spring Hill, Bailey Hill and Ding-a-ding-nook .

The middle south around Falmouth Bay and Shirley Heights is one of the tourist centers, otherwise the area is farmland, once tobacco and then sugar cane plantations, today all kinds of agricultural products. The population growth was 11.5% in 2001-2011, below the national average (15 , 6%).
